Seattle Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

On Saturday, Jason completed the 26.2 mile Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon! He has been training for this for the last couple of months and we are so proud of his huge accomplishment.

He ran the marathon in 4 hours 15 minutes. It was a little bit more time than he wanted, but pretty darn impressive for his first time ever. He said that at about half way through, his leg started cramping and he had to slow down for a few miles. He's pretty sure that the cramping was caused by dehydration. He didn't get enough to drink early on, but after he started cramping he made sure that he took more time to drink and felt better after that. I am so amazed that he did it (although I never doubted that he would) and I'm glad he had such a good time. He said the experience was amazing to be down there with 25,000 other runners. He was getting pretty nervous the last few weeks before the marathon because his knee had been hurting him pretty bad and he was worried he wasn't going to be able to do it. He decided to just let it rest and so he barely ran at all for 3 weeks prior to the marathon. Crazy! I'm so excited for him.

The 26.2 marathon started on Interurban Ave in Tukwila (near BECU) and runs through Tukwila and makes its way to the scenic shores of Lake Washington for miles 4 through 9. Then it heads over the floating Lake Washington Bridge and all participants head toward downtown Seattle on Interstate 90. They then continue north onto the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Hwy 99, with views of Elliott Bay, passing the Space Needle and Lake Union as the Alaskan Way Viaduct/Hwy 99 becomes Aurora. Runners then u-turn and head back toward downtown on the highway before finishing outside of Qwest Stadium downtown.... and that is a very, very long way to run!

When he decided to do the marathon, it was just something he wanted to experience once, but now that he's finished, he (of course) wants to do another one. He said that he wants to do one where he's not cramping just to see how well he can do. We'll see!... maybe he'll do it again next year!

Here is a picture our friend, Doug, took while he was working downtown at King5. This was at about mile 20. Below is a picture of some friends of ours that ran the marathon as well.

I used to nanny for a family that traveled the world and ran marathons. I am so amazed at the hard work and dedication that goes into running one! I bow down!
