Our tour included visiting a homestead cabin built in the 1880's and learning about the families who built and lived in it. We got to learn all about the chores that pioneer children did, such as grinding grains, churning butter, and scrubbing laundry. They even got to dress up as pioneers!During the barn tour, they learned how the children's chores included gathering eggs, milking, and taking care of all the animals. Audrey thought milking the goat was pretty cool and her favorite animal, of course, was the little piglet named Bacon Bits. The blacksmith shop was very cool too. They saw how the pioneers used a forge to pound and bend a horse shoe and there was also a wood shop where they could pound nails and they watched how the pioneers had to saw wood.
Another interesting part of the tour was seeing the replica of the one room school house and learning about all the strict rules and punishments for disobedient students.... Just coming to school with dirt under your fingernails would result in a lashing!
Audrey thought all the chores were so fun and wishes that this was how we lived today. And even though they mentioned that children had very little time for play because they were always so busy with chores, she still didn't care. I think it would probably take all of about two or three days of living this way for real before that tune would change! This is an actual table setting from the 1800's that was used in this real homstead cabin.
This was a really fun field trip! It was so interesting and sure made me really appreciate all the luxuries we have today!
